Under the direction of the Clinical Program Director and Chief Clinical Officer and in collaboration with cancer center leaders, faculty, staff and the organization as a whole, the Smilow Cancer Hospital (SCH) Quality and Safety Coordinator develops and supports the design, implementation, evaluation and advancement of a culture of clinical quality and patient safety within the SCH involving all dimensions of patient/family care and all members of the multidisciplinary team delivering that care. The incumbent plans, develops and directs the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement functions of the SCH providing the leadership necessary to achieve national best practice performance levels in quality improvement while facilitating the implementation of evidence based medicine/clinical practices. Ensures that the quality of cancer care services rendered meets or exceeds professionally recognized national and institutional standards. Interfaces with a diverse range of clinical and administrative professionals, resolves sometimes complex policy and service issues within the group, directs prescribed data analysis and reporting activities and ensures compliance with regulatory agency requirements (state, federal, accreditation organizations).

Responsibilities

  • 1. Provides leadership for a program for quality improvement for multidisciplinary disease based teams and staff involved in the delivery of cancer care in the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven
    • 1.1 Develop, implement, and evaluate an overall plan for achieving a culture of quality and patient safety consistent with National Patient Safety goals and the priorities of YNHH and Yale Cancer Center.
  • 2. Leads/facilitates strategic and tactical planning for the quality improvement program, including needs assessments, evaluations, root cause analysis and rapid cycle quality improvement techniques
    • 2.1 Designs programs to prospectively evaluate patient/family care and to identify, study, and correct deficiencies; identifies opportunities to improve the patient-care delivery process and the patient experience.
  • 3. Serves as a liaison among and between Yale New Haven Health System Cancer Network, Yale New Haven Hospital, the Smilow Cancer Hospital and the Yale Cancer Center for the purpose of improving quality care and integration.
    • 3.1 Collaborates in the design and implementation of an integrated organizational quality program
  • 4. Facilitates the translation of evidence into practice.
    • 4.1 Facilitates and organizes clinical quality teams within disease teams to evaluate, analyze, and synthesize data based on evidence and benchmarks.
  • 5. Provides leadership for data management related to patient safety and quality
    • 5.1 Provides oversight for indicator selection and data collection
  • 6. Provides leadership to ensure cost effective strategies which result in improved patient outcomes and regulatory compliance.
    • 6.1 Facilitates clinical decision-making processes that optimize the use of resources as well as attain quality outcomes.
  • 7. Additional clinical skills may be required in certain specialty areas.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

 

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare, Health Administration, Public Health or related field. Master's Degree or higher preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

5+ years of quality improvement experience. 3+ years management experience. Clinical experience in the field of Oncology required. Excellent knowledge of various regulatory agencies, including TJC, DPH, CMS, National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and other nationally recognized oncology related standards of care as well as the Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Reporting System are strongly preferred. Working knowledge of Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI), Utilization Review Accreditation Committee (URAC), Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and other relevant quality related organizations and databases are a plus.

 

LICENSURE

 

RN with active CT licensure (preferred). Certification in Healthcare Quality by the Healthcare Quality Certification Board, or equivalent (desirable), OCN

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

 

Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, coordinative, and organizational skills. Excellent understanding of accreditation, federal and state regulations/requirements Strong analytical and problem solving skills; ability to multitask in a fast paced complex environment Proficient in Microsoft Office such as Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint and Outlook Evidence of Lean, DMAIC or Six Sigma training and/or project experience. Certification is strongly preferred.
