Bridgeport Hospital offers a comprehensive 1 year Medical Surgical Nurse Residency program designed to effectively support new graduate nurses as they transition into a confident professional.


The program is designed to facilitate the development of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for successful nurses of the future. Critical thinking will be enhanced through utilization of the nursing process, communication, socialization, teamwork, and simulation. The resident will feel confident in caring for the medically complex patient across the care continuum.

Graduates of the program are able to incorporate evidence based research into their daily practice to consistently provide high quality, safe patient care. The 1 year program will consist of two (2) weeks of hospital and core nursing orientation, six (6) weeks of an intensive mentorship period, and followed by ten (10) monthly sessions of didactic and simulation hours. The didactic portion will involve lectures, case studies, videos, journaling, research, and case study presentations. Simulation will be utilized to facilitate the transfer of knowledge to the acute care arena.


Program will meet the first Tuesday of every month, except for July, will be the second Tuesday due to the holiday.



A dedication and commitment to medical surgical nursing will be the foundation for success for all applicants to the Residency Program.


Eligibility:Must have strong interest in Medical Surgical Nursing.
