I/P CODING APPRENTICE

Performs a variety of activities involving entry level inpatient coding of medical records as a mechanism for indexing medical information; which is used for research, utilization, appropriateness of care, compilation of statistics for hospital regional and government, and accurate reimbursement. Will code patient records for a length of stay not greater than 1-6 days.
- 1. Codes and analyzes inpatient and other data in a timely and accurate manner to ensure that all records are current.
- 1.1 Analyzes inpatient medical records identifying diagnosis and procedures, as observed by the supervisor.
- 2. Accurately assigns ICD-9 / ICD-10 codes in accordance with coding/departmental guidelines.
- 2.1 Assigns ICD-9 / ICD-10 codes in accordance with coding and departmental guidelines, maintaining no less than 95% accuracy in choice of codes, as observed by the supervisor.
High school graduate with completion of a coding course and be CCS eligible. Understanding of anatomy, terminology, and physiology.
No previous coding work experience required.
Designed for coding students that have completed their curriculum work and are currently in externships or have passed the CCS but have not actually worked in the coding role. These employees would be put through a 6 week YNHH coding curriculum and become eligible for a Coder1 position after one year.
