INPATIENT CODER/ANALYST 3

Performs a variety of activities involving highly complex inpatient coding of medical records as a mechanism for indexing medical information, which is used for research, utilization, appropriateness of care, compilation of statistics for hospital, regional and government and accurate reimbursement. Will code patient records for greater than 12+ days length of stay with a focus on complex specialties, surgery, vascular, transplants, burns, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, trauma, and oncology.
- 1. Codes and analyzes inpatient medical records and other data in a timely and accurate manner to ensure that all records are current.
- 1.1 Analyzes inpatient medical records identifying diagnosis and procedures, as observed by the supervisor.
- 2. Accurately assigns ICD-9 / ICD-10 codes in accordance with coding/departmental guidelines.
- 2.1 Assigns ICD-9 / ICD-10 codes in accordance with coding and departmental guidelines, maintaining no less than 95% accuracy in choice of codes, as observed by the supervisor.
High school diploma and Two (2) years of college or equivalent with additional training in medical terminology and anatomy. Required CCS Certified Coding Specialist and/or RHIT/RHIA.
Minimum of three year experience coding inpatient medical records with ICD-9 / ICD-10.
Required certifications: CCS and/or RHIA/RHIA preferred
In-depth knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and disease process. Comprehensive understanding in use of ICD-9 / ICD-10. Understanding and knowledge of PPS (DRG's and APC's). Strong oral and written communication skills to interact with Clinical Documentation Specialist (CD's) and M.D. physicians on a regular basis. Ability to exercise good judgment, independent logic, light typing and excellent computer data entry skills. Possess analytic skills to identify trends and areas for educational opportunities and ability to mentor. Advanced understanding of encoding systems.
