Consumer Health Librarian

Serves the health information needs of the patients, family, and caregivers of the Greenwich Hospital community. Develops, coordinates, and implements health literacy/consumer health information programs and outreach to the Greenwich community. Serves as a health information advocate for consumers and the health care professionals who serve them. Creates an environment where diverse health information needs are met in a timely and confidential manner. Assists and supports the Director of Library Services in achieving the Library's goals and objectives.



  • 1. Collection Management: Identify CHI/patient education materials for review and possible purchase. Select CHI/patient education materials books, journals, audiovisuals, pamphlets, databases, and Internet resources. Build and authoritative collection of CHI/patient education materials in print and electronic form that meets the needs of the Greenwich Hospital community. Maintain a current collection of materials.
  • 2. Knowledge and Resource Sharing: Network with other individuals, organizations, and agencies to facilitate resource sharing of CHI/patient education materials. Consult on the identification, selection, and organization of patient education materials for various health care settings, e.g. nursing units, ambulatory clinics, visitor waiting areas, etc. Serve on institutional committees, e.g. patient education, community health education, medical ethics, etc. to encourage and support the development of CHI/patient education resources. Work with the hospital and community to develop informational and educational programs related to health issues, e.g. weight control, diabetes, living wills, etc. Act as a resource by advising and assisting members of the GH health care teams who wish to develop evidence-based learner appropriate CHI/patient education resources in their practice settings. Assess and evaluate literacy and learning levels of requesters in order to provide appropriate materials to consumers.
  • 3. Advocacy: Promote patient safety through the provision of quality information that enhances the patients' abilities to evaluate data and clinical practices. Advocate for the right of consumers to access information. Promote the role of the librarian as part of the health care team.
  • 4. Information Dissemination: Serve on patient care teams, e.g. discharge planning rounds, to identify and fill CHI needs of the patients and families in coordination with health care provides. Create and compile CHI/patient information resources and/or pathways that are accessible via the Internet and other national information networks.
  • 5. Education: Create awareness for health professionals regarding the health information needs of consumers, including information and health literacy issues and learner preferences. Present education programs for public and other librarians on the effective provision of CHI. Provide educational programs for the general public on locating and evaluating health information.
  • 6. Goals and Objectives: Meets with supervisor annually to develop annual departmental goals and objectives. Meets with supervisor on a quarterly basis to evaluate outcomes with approved justification for variances. Contributes to all in-house publications.
  • 7. Daily Activities: Keeps the supervisor informed of department programs, needs, problems, and other pertinent incidents at all times as indicated by departmental feedback and supervisory observation. Analyzes and resolves problems independently and as appropriate, refers decisions to others. Provides back-up support for day-to-day operational activities, as needed. Actively participates either individually or as a team member on library related committees and/or special projects.




Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school Medical Library Association Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) Level I or II preferred.




Minimum of one year's experience, preferably in a hospital setting Strong knowledge in medical database literature searching Knowledge of and experience in the use of consumer health information resources








Strong computer skills, including medical databases, as well as Microsoft Office; Ability to manage multiple projects; Ability to organize/produce consumer health literacy workshops; Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; Excellent teaching/presentations skills; Detailed oriented




Ability to walk; stand for various lengths of time; stoop; kneel; speak fluent English; hear; and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements are in concert with using a computer for extended lengths of time and the ability to read medium to fine print when necessary. Valid driver's license.
