Director, Tax

Overview:

WeWork is currently seeking a tax professional with experience working with real estate private equity and other real estate investment firms to join the company's growing investment and asset management group. This professional will advise WeWork on matters relating to development and implementation of tax strategies and organization and maintenance of complicated tax structures in the context of WeWork's real estate investment and asset management strategies. Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and advise on, and create, maintain, and update documentation in support of, various tax attributes of the business, including earnings and profits, foreign taxes paid, tax loss carryforwards, valuation allowances, and tax credits

  • Research and resolve tax technical and tax accounting issues and prepare and maintain relevant documentation

  • Advise on tax and tax accounting aspects of structuring, formation, and maintenance of investments and investment vehicles, including real estate investment trusts (and similar/comparable structures)

  • Collaborate with internal personnel and external tax advisors and other specialists to support key projects and initiatives, and oversee and manage the group's relationships with third party tax advisors

  • Oversee and manage compliance with all external and intercompany agreement requirements, calculations, and payments, including in respect of real estate investment trusts (and similar/comparable structures), and document tax implications and reporting requirements of transactions, including stamp tax and transfer tax considerations

  • Prepare, support, and review all tax filings, elections, and forms (including partnership tax returns and Forms K-1) in collaboration with outside tax preparers, and assist outside tax advisors in domestic and international tax compliance and preparation of domestic and international tax provision

  • Monitor new tax laws and determine impact to the business, and advise on any necessary response or restructuring

  • Determine effective tax rates and related disclosures, reconcile all tax accounts and roll-forwards, and identify and document global uncertain tax positions and reserves

  • Identify and document book-to-tax differences, reconcile tax filings to tax provisions, maintain tax basis balance sheets, and test deferred tax balances

  • Lead preparation of annual and quarterly global tax provision, including the tax-related financial statement disclosures and related documentation

  • Prepare and review all tax-related workpapers and journal entries

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Degree in business administration, finance, accounting, economics, law, or a related field

  • 10+ years of experience advising high-growth organizations and preferably real estate investment and asset management firms in respect of tax matters

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of substance and strategies relating to U.S. and international tax laws, rules, regulations, and treaties relevant to the real estate sector, including structuring, formation, and maintenance of real estate investment trusts (and similar/comparable structures) and other investment vehicles for U.S. and non-U.S. investors and including FATCA and similar tax laws and regulations

  • Knowledge and understanding of U.S. GAAP accounting concepts

  • Strong solutions-oriented analytical and verbal/written communication skills, particularly in respect of communicating complicated tax concepts to non-expert colleagues and other parties

  • Service-oriented attitude characterized by strong listening skills and the desire to achieve shared success

  • Attention to detail and time- and project-management skills

Preferred qualifications and experience:

  • Big 4, law firm, or large multinational in-house tax department experience

  • Previous experience working with real estate private equity clients
