Portfolio Analyst

The Research Analyst will take the primary analytical responsibility for a variety of industries and companies in which Wells Capital Management currently invests or is likely to take a position. The analyst will utilize fundamental research skills, including business risk analysis and financial ratio analysis, which will then be overlaid with relative value considerations to produce trade recommendations for Portfolio Managers and traders. The analyst's coverage will include investment grade and select crossover issuers, both in developed and developing markets.

The analyst also will be expected to take the lead role on various ad-hoc projects, participate in meetings with a management teams and as requested, periodically meet with clients, prospects and consultants. (Note: In addition to these functions employees are required to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be required.)


  • Analyze companies within specific industries with respect to firm specific operational and financial performance
  • Assess broad industry trends such as shifts in competition, regulation and legislation, and/or general market dynamics with a view towards investment implications
  • Build and maintain financial and ratio analyses
  • Attend company and industry presentations
  • Establish and build relationships with sell-side contacts and other market participants such as rating agency analysts
  • Produce both written and verbal research to support trade recommendations
  • Participate in a various team meetings
  • Work with portfolio managers, traders and other research analysts on ad hoc projects as appropriate
  • Represent Wells Capital Management's research capabilities at client, prospect and/or consultant meetings

Market Skills and Certifications
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of investment research experience
  • Required License: Fund Management under the Securities & Futures Act
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and achieve results
  • Ability to work independently, proactively, innovatively, and creatively while exercising sound judgment
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player with ability to support team in achieving group goals
  • Ability to provide unique and differentiated insight for industries under coverage
  • The candidate will be degree qualified (at least undergraduate college degree), and ideally should have attained the right to use the CFA designation or be working towards a CFA
  • Minimum of three years relevant industry experience in credit or equity research
  • Ability to analyze companies from a fundamental and financial perspective, including the ability to independently construct financial models and comparative analyses
  • Ability to understand, analyze and communicate key differentiating factors within corporate bond documentation and capital structures (e.g. subordination, covenant restrictions, negative pledges, etc.)
  • Understanding of bond pricing, general market technicals and relative value drivers
  • Ability to lead meetings with issuers and regulators while displaying professionalism in all dealings with external counterparties (including clients)
  • Effectively communicate credit recommendations and trade ideas to portfolio managers and traders (via verbal and written material)
  • Proficient in the use of Excel, Bloomberg and market-relevant technologies
  • Ability to work independently; self-motivated
  • Capacity to exercise judgement in time management and prioritization of work
