Job Description

Strategy Program Manager, VMware App Navigator - Portfolio

Digital transformation is a phrase overused to describe a complex array of initiatives and programs. Modernization across the application portfolio is essential, yet many IT organizations struggle to get traction, quantify outcomes and deliver at scale. Your opportunity on this team is to collaborate with customers who face these challenges, and work closely with our amazingly talented Solution Architects, to cut through ambiguity, plan roadmaps, measure and prove value during short yet impactful consulting engagements. The process relies on your creativity to gather needed information, draw business insights, and turn those insights into cohesive and flexible strategies that meet evolving customer expectations. Short (hours, days or a handful of weeks) engagements mean an exciting, fast-paced set of conversations where you will uplevel your people and process management skills while sharpening your storytelling capacities. Short engagements also means a lot of iteration - a unique opportunity to practice your craft, help shape our team's template for success, and develop your eye for patterns in the industry.

Success in the Role: What performance outcomes will you be working toward over the first 6-12 months?

You will demonstrate:

  • Pragmatism, thoughtfulness, and dynamic leadership of people and processes
  • A strong passion for agile and lean principles.
  • An ability to thrive in a complex ecosystem, collecting, sharing, and synthesizing input from many directions and enabling your team to continuously deliver customer value.
  • An ability to communicate technical and programmatic information at the right level of detail for the appropriate varied audiences.

  • Your collaboration with senior stakeholders to define and manage priorities will result in successful engagements that open the door to productive conversations about future engagements.
  • Your robust collaboration with fellow VMWare team members will result in an ever more robust and effective playbook for executing our engagements.

The tangible theme in your work is that you judge your success by the success of your team and the happiness of our customers.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
  • Helping clients to define and plan prioritized program outcomes, measured goals and iterative "get started" plans that create and build momentum
  • Facilitating workshops, using Event Storming, Value Stream Mapping, OKRs, and various other specialized techniques that elicit understanding of existing application portfolios, systems, organizations, business flows and/or related IT processes
  • Establishing effective communications and collaboration between the client, our service delivery teams, delivery leadership, and account teams to ensure alignment and successful expectation management
  • Managing risk, budget, and dependencies, driving staffing demand, handling escalations and planning interventions to improve engagement health when necessary, and continuously measuring appropriate metrics for success
  • Creating documentation, presentations and other customer-facing assets that accomplish intended project objectives
  • Close collaboration with clients and other VMware teams, based on project backlog
  • Support enablement of clients around the principles and practices we apply to lean program management and software delivery
  • Contributing back to the VMware team through mentorship, giving talks, and experience reports

What is the leadership team like? What is the structure and culture of the team?

We are big thinkers who generate a lot of ideas, debate with kindness, collaborate on initiatives that matter, and maintain a safe space for all. We support each other by whatever means necessary, and trust each other to get the job done right, in a way that accommodates a flexible schedule to balance work and life. We look forward to welcoming team members, and work hard to make sure the onboarding process is smooth.

Where is this role located?

Today the job is fully remote, and it's hard to accurately predict what the future may hold.

Our projects are short - from a few hours to six weeks (at most) and we prioritize staffing based on project needs, skill, and location. We believe the fastest way to build customer rapport and authentic relationships is in person. When we kickoff a project in person, working remotely with "new friends" is much easier, leading to happier and more productive remote days. Once the pandemic is behind us, we expect this mode of occasional travel (10-30% overall) to start and close a project will be commonplace. Having flexibility to accommodate this reality is important.
