Job Role:

The Cloud Platform Business Unit (CPBU) R&D organization is responsible for vSphere, our Core Virtualization Infrastructure, and Solutions for Enterprise Virtualization, Cloud initiatives.

We are seeking highly talented technical professionals with Bachelors', Masters' or PhD degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent fields and at least 8 years of relevant experience, to join our Workload Mobility team in Palo Alto, California. The mission of this team is to enable workload mobility within Software Defined Data Center (SDDC) and increase adoption of the Hybrid Cloud by enabling mobility across clouds. As a member of our team, you will architect, design and build products that make the Hybrid Cloud a reality, including emphasis on our flagship products - vMotion and Storage vMotion. As part of this effort, you will design and implement novel operating system techniques and distributed system algorithms for vSphere. You will participate in designing and implementing highly scalable components in the vSphere platform for large, distributed management servers used to control and configure VMware virtual machines. You will interact with senior architects, product managers, solution architects and sometimes with partners and customers to discuss and collaborate on strategies for improving features and to come up with the future set of products.

Responsibilities:

  • You will architect, design, implement and test, kernel and application code
  • You will design and own key components of our infrastructure
  • You will evangelize test-driven development and owning code quality, and drive the organization to adopt the "dev owns quality" model
  • You will improve and maintain CI pipelines for your components
  • You will perform code reviews and enforce coding guidelines
  • You will build automated tools to measure, analyze and tune performance and scalability
  • You will develop flexible, reusable code that can be shared in multiple components across several operating systems/hypervisors
  • You will interact with other product teams both within VMware and our partners, customer support organization and the release team
  • You will interact with senior architects, solutions architects, PMs, UI/UX to provide the best experience for our customers
  • You will lead a team and make crucial roadmap decisions
  • You will mentor junior team members
  • You will innovate, break status quo and inspire
  • You will respond to customer issues
  • You will support your features on the cloud


Required Skills:
  • Multithreaded programming, knowledge of distributed systems, server-side programming
  • Strong experience with C programming and Systems, Kernel-level code development and debugging
  • Excellent understanding of system architecture and Operating Systems concepts including memory and resource management
  • Understanding of system architecture, including processors, storage and networking
  • Excellent understanding of how to use various data structures and algorithms to write optimized code
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong critical thinking and leadership skills
  • Must have Linux/Unix experience


Preferred skills:
  • Knowledge of networking (TCP/IP protocols) and storage stacks
  • Experience with C++ programming
  • Python, Perl, or similar scripting languages
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies
  • A passion for writing high-quality, well-architected and well-documented code
  • Ability to work in a teamwork environment
  • Excellent communication skills
