The Tanzu Observability by Wavefront team (TObs) is hiring a Senior Staff Engineer to help lead the team to the next stage of growth and impact. TObs came into being as a startup over six years ago, and through acquisition and growth has turned into a team of over 120 people developing a massively scalable SaaS service.

As a Senior Staff Engineer in this team, you'd be able to guide the transition from a startup to the next two orders of magnitude scaling. You'll contribute in multiple ways, from being deep in the performance aspects of the system, to designing in resiliency, to helping prioritize infrastructure fixes against the never-ending list of features by customers. But most of all, you'll be expected to help set a culture of continuous learning and improvement, of innovation, of ownership, and of collaboration.

This is a unique opportunity to lead a high-performance software team spread across the world to build the cornerstone of the Tanzu portfolio.

Success in this role in the next 6-12 months looks like the following:

  • TObs has releases that go out without incident, released from mainline, every week like clockwork.
  • You learn & understand the TObs stack enough to contribute to architectural design and identify any weak points, guiding the team towards fixing them while balancing the needs of customers.
  • TObs itself grows more than 30% as measured by pps, but the number of production incidents goes down, the Mean Time to Resolution of failures goes down, and the escaped defect rate goes down.
  • You grow a solid team of tech leaders under you to specialize in key aspects of the architecture.

What type of work will I be doing? What assignments or requirements will I be performing on a regular basis?
  • Technical: On the technical front, you'll be expected to review and approve designs in the system. To identify and come up with improvements to the architecture to enable it to scale 100x over where it is today. To diagnose deep issues in the stack, write code to fix and prevent, roll out to production.
  • Organizational : Organizationally, you'll be expected to build a resilient, scalable, organization where everyone feels comfortable to call out issues, to propose new ideas, and to learn with peers. You'll do this through a combination of mentoring team members and teaching broadly to scale. You'll furthermore be partnering with other teams in Tanzu (Tanzu Mission Control, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, and more) to ensure that the TObs team's architectures and designs are informed by and inform your peer teams.
  • Product: You'll support the product, through becoming an expert in it and internalizing the roadmap and matching the technical designs to it. You'll meet customers, understand their needs, and guide them to the right implementations to fulfill those needs. You'll bring the lessons you learn from those customers back to your team to make the TObs product and team stronger.

Finally you'll be always improving, getting help from your management team and VP through coaching and mentoring to help you grow to your eventual career goals, wherever that takes you.
