Telco and Edge Cloud (TEC) business unit enables the worldwide ecosystem of Communications Service Providers (CSP) to transform their networks into flexible, agile, and programmable environments through Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and SDN.
Job Description:
The Principal Engineer will report to the Vice President, R&D, TECBU and be responsible for architecting the software architecture for the Telco Cloud. The telco cloud will be a highly distributed, nationwide multi-cloud system that will enable telcos to deploy 5G networks and edge cloud services as software applications on top and thus transform telco legacy infrastructure into modern, agile cloud-scale systems. The successful candidate will have experience creating architectures for cloud-scale systems and orchestration/automation platforms. Knowledge of Telco is helpful, but not critical. Knowledge of most or all of networking, containers, virtualization, multi-cloud and distributed systems is needed. The successful candidate will be an innovative and seasoned software architect with a 15+ year proven track record in architecting highly scalable cloud platforms within large complex systems. The candidate should be driven and passionate about understanding customer needs and crafting high quality solutions to meet those needs. He/She will have experience in leading the creation and delivery of complex cloud software solutions that have resulted in significant market impact. This person will be an integral part of our TECBU senior leadership team and a thought leader within VMware and the industry.
Primary responsibilities of this role include:
Lead and drive engineering architecture in the ongoing evolution, growth, and transformation of legacy Telco solutions into sophisticated cloud based solutions leveraging VMware technology.
Be a hands-on architect who will design and develop software architecture for the current and future generation of telco.
Ensure high-quality software and high customer satisfaction.
Deliver technical collateral including technical case studies, best practices guides, whitepapers, and solution reference architecture to drive adoption of VMware's products.
Be a respected leader in the company and industry. Establish a strong collaborative culture with peers and other functions within VMware. Promote a culture of success, pride, performance, discipline, and creativity.
Be an effective spokesperson and champion for the TecBU team.
Become a motivated product and industry influencer by maintaining deep technical and business knowledge of various market segments and of best-of-breed network virtualization strategies.
Work with fellow principal engineers, architects, product management, executives, and other stakeholders to define the technical roadmap for the product in response to customer requirements and market forces.
Qualifications Required:
Minimum of 15+ years of engineering architecture experience with a strong track record of successful development and delivery of complex, enterprise software that resulted in material market impact.
Significant engineering experience in cloud scale architecture providing orchestration and automation capabilities.
A highly driven leader that is known to deliver in high growth and highly dynamic environments.
Successful experience of setting the vision, building, leading and motivating global engineering teams at scale.
Prior technical paper publications and public speaking engagements.
Ability to see and present "the big picture" and offer solutions to make it better.
An extraordinarily intelligent, rigorous thinker who can operate successfully among very bright and charismatic people.
Equally comfortable and capable of interacting with technologists as with business executives.
Strong customer facing and relationship building skills.
Possesses a strong work ethic, be hands-on and be able to delegate effectively.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral are required
Education:
BS in Computer Science or related technical degree. Advanced degree strongly desired.
