Intern - Virtual Storage Devices Team - Austin

The Virtual Storage Devices team is responsible for interaction between the Virtual Machine Monitor, storage device emulation and a host OS (we support ESX, Linux, Windows and Mac OS). This includes maintaining a set of platform independent libraries used across many VMware products to interface with virtual disks on datastores such as VMFS, VSAN, VVOL, NFS and legacy devices such as cdrom, floppy. The team consists of passionate, experienced OS generalists who can apply their knowledge to solve a wide variety of systems level problems.


  • Understand design requirements and write efficient, high-quality code.
  • Diagnose and resolve problems, at system call, kernel and storage level on ESX, related to running virtual machines.
  • Work with QE engineers to ensure software testability, stability, and quality of your code.
  • Document and present your project at a VMware intern poster session.


Essential skills:

  • Excellent C programming skills.
  • Experience developing multi-threaded, distributed applications.
  • Familiarity with Unix and/or Windows programming.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Studying Computer Science or a related field.
