Picture Quality Engineer

A qualified candidate for this exciting position at VIZIO will be recognized as an expert in all aspects of video transmission, processing and quality, including video formats, video processing, and video display technologies. The PQ Engineer will be directly involved in all display and image processing related aspects of product development, exection, and definition.

The PQ Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Closely coordinating with our manufacturing parters to ensure products are of the highest possible Picture Quality
  • Evaluating and tracking existing and emerging Video delivery, processing, and display technologies in support of VIZIO’s long term product roadmap
  • Working closely with VIZIO development partners and suppliers to ensure timely and high quality execution of video products
  • Identifying architectures and coordinating the appropriate internal and external resources to implement all video aspects of the VIZIO product roadmap
  • Serving as the resident expert on video technology, tasked with identifying and resolving video issues with the support of internal and external resources
  • Create and maintain policies, tools, and procedures to evaluate, maintain, and maximize image quality on all VIZIO products throughout the development, production, and support lifecycle
  • Serve as the resident Picture Quality expert, directly working to calibrate and evaluate individual products and coordinate timely and repeatable Picture Quality optimization by all VIZIO vendors and manufacturing partners
  • Evaluate and influence the designs of future VIZIO Video subsystems, including, SoCs, external processors, LCD characteristics, illuminations systems, advanced displays, and ancillary processing elements such as TCONs and FRC devices

Required Experience

  • Bachelors of Science or Masters of Science (preferred)
  • 8+ years of related experience

Deep understanding and experience with, but not limited to:

  • Video codecs, digital audio/video system layer schemes and bit rate management
  • Digital Rights Management and security
  • Analog and digital video broadcast and interface standards, including ATSC/NTSC, DVB-T, HDMI, Display Port, component and composite video
  • Characteristics and applicable metadata of video formats, including telecine, frame rates, aspect ratios, chroma sub-sampling, interlacing, color spaces
  • Video processing functions including state of that art scaling, enhancement, noise reduction, frame rate conversion and interpolation, color space conversion, and detailed analysis of candidate video processing pipelines and processes
  • EOTF and OETF technologies, standards, and innovations
  • Video display technologies including LCD, OLED, and others
  • Advanced LCD technologies and techniques including LED illuminants, Quantum Dots, dynamic backlight controls, direct and edge LEDs, diffusers, color filter design and evaluation, dynamic pixel compensation, low OD backlight designs
  • Evaluation of and development of tools and metrics to measure and optimize picture quality, uniformity, performance and display power consumption
  • Color spaces, human perception, wide color gamut technologies
  • Industry standard and next-generation image and performance metrics, evaluation, and picture quality automation
  • Real world production, control, and optimization of high volume, high-quality display systems
