Senior Web Engineer/Architect
Want a cool job? You’ve come to the right place.
So why is a Virgin Mobile gig posted on the Sprint website? And vice versa? Our two entrepreneurial brands teamed up when Sprint acquired Virgin Mobile USA and now we’re ready to disrupt the mobile industry by experimenting with new business models and utilizing diverse technology and partners.
Essentially, Virgin Mobile USA is a startup on steroids in need of top-shelf talent to change the mobile business for good. Sprint carved out Virgin Mobile USA to act independently so naturally, we set up shop in downtown Kansas City, where 400 brain-powered, ultra-creative and high-tech companies operate in the nation’s leading smart city, conveniently located equidistantly from both coasts. There’s even a slick new streetcar, a vibrant entertainment district and some sweet residential options right outside our front door.
We can ramble on about Kansas City, but we can’t spill the beans yet about the ingredients in the Virgin Mobile USA secret sauce. In the meantime, know that we’re aggressively recruiting game changers (a.k.a., experienced leaders, greenhorns and Millennials) to collaborate on a passionate team that will transform the mobile world.
Some of our team members just moved here from Denver, Seattle and Chicago. Others arrive soon from New Jersey, Portland, Toronto and England, while others are from right here in Missouri and Kansas. Call it a SWAT team of experts in specialties such as member service, digital marketing, operations, logistics, IT and engineering, just to name a few. And we’re looking for the best of the best to help us expand our capabilities — no mobile experience required.
Are you ready to make your money where your heart is? Want to join an authentically fun bunch that loves to make people smile? If you said yes and yes, read on. And remember, you’ll be redirected to the Sprint website during the application process, but that’s just because we haven’t hired you yet to finish building our amazing website.
Reporting to the Director, Web Operations, the Senior Web Engineer/Architect cracks the code behind the Virgin Mobile website. You’ll take great care of our soon-to-be-launched, extremely user-friendly website through the consistent delivery of precise and logical code vetted through rigorous quality assurance.
Every day, you’ll help direct development efforts and integrate the Virgin Mobile website with third-party systems, as well as advocate for code quality, reuse, extensibility and best practices. As you complete this vital digital work, you’ll play nice with others and create a cooperative work environment that includes straight-up communication across teams (designers, engineering, marketing, operations, etc.) as well as motivate and mentor teammates. You’ll also need to simply explain the website’s functionality to non-technical audiences, yet be ready to debate tabs versus spaces with our internal whiz kids.
Additionally, can you connect lower-level technical details to the needs of our business? How about provide consultative and diagnostic expertise on the site’s code base and technology stack? Think you’ve got what it takes? Great. First, make sure you can check off most of the below:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and eight years related work experience
- Or 12 years related work experience post high school
Experience working in a Java environment
- Experience with (or an insatiable curiosity to learn) other languages and frameworks such as Python/Django or Ruby on Rails
- Expertise using Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Proficiency working with JSON APIs and SaaS
- Understanding of how to work in a scrum-based Agile environment
And if all that web work wasn’t cool enough, Virgin Mobile USA offers its people some awesome perks, along with competitive pay and killer benefits. Oh, and did we mention you get free mobile service? Yes, free! (Plus discounts for friends and family.) You’ll also get health insurance, a 401(k), tuition reimbursement, paid time off and a wellness program, just to name a few benefits.
Finally, if we didn’t have you at “hello,” you’ll be part of two pioneering brands in today’s global economy. Richard Branson started Virgin in the 1970s with just a single mail-order record business, and today, the Virgin Group comprises 60 companies and generates $24 billion in revenue by 71,000 employees delivering heartfelt service to 60 million customers worldwide. Sprint’s roots date back to 1938, and the company now provides 57.9 million subscribers with mobile service through 30,000 employees and generates $32 billion in revenue.
