Role x You
VICE News Tonight is looking for an assignment editor in Brooklyn, NY. The candidate must have a clear understanding of VICE's story focus and our style of storytelling. Successful applicants will demonstrate expertise in the news and documentary field, and an ability to flourish in a team environment.
This is not a field position -- the assignment editor's primary job is to coordinate daily news coverage both editorially and logistically. The editor will also make calls to confirm breaking news stories. The position will also assign and coordinate daily assignments at the direction of senior management.
Candidates should understand the fundamentals of news gathering, and must be clear writers who are comfortable managing information and dispersing it to the broader news organization. The assignment editors will be called on to generate stories ideas that can be acted on immediately as well as in the future.
Long hours and weekend work expected
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conceptualize, develop and commission coverage plans for daily news stories, segments.
- Participate in daily editorial/planning meetings; propose ideas for story coverage.
- Work in tandem with the different news programs to develop and define coverage plans and treatments.
- Coordinate with senior staff to commission material from field, and help maintain news & planning logs.
- Monitor news wires, news agencies and other news sources
- Coordinate with graphics team on treatments for packages.
- Perform other duties relevant to the job as requested
- MUST be proactive
Knowledge and Abilities
- Proven leadership skills
- Ability to pitch, develop, plan and create stories within strict time parameters.
- Capable of working under pressure, multitasking and coordinating with multiple teams.
- Strong writing, researching, communication, interpersonal skills
- Exercises good news judgment with strong knowledge of international news
- Organized, adaptable and detail oriented.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor degree in Journalism or related fields
- Minimum 5 years of experience in news or related fields
