Packaging Engineer

The Packaging Engineer will serve as a packaging expert to direct, develop and design materials for safe, convenient, and attractive, brand-appropriate transport of goods under a variety of conditions. Evaluate packaging and transportation methods and procedures to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards and work to identify continuous improvement and cost savings opportunities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (Note: Other duties may be assigned)

  • Take package concept from inception to drawings, model stage, sampling to actual production
  • Recommend the optimum package solution for new products
  • Provide technical packaging support to the product development team
  • Provide technical packaging support for manufacturing
  • Evaluate packaging performance and costing of materials/vendors to support Procurement initiatives
  • Review design and documentation to ensure compliance with design criteria and standards
  • Design custom packaging that translates to cost effective manufacturing
  • Develop and issue technical specifications for packaging components
  • Write and maintain accurate, up-to-date files for all packaging specifications for products
  • Calculate costs for packaging designs
  • Responsible for approval of labeling, packaging development and interface with marketing
  • Construct prototype designs for customer review and approval
  • Champion packaging ideas for savings, innovation and quality improvements that are relevant to the business
  • Provide customer support, directly with customer service

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelors Degree in Packaging or related field, or equivalent experience required
  • 2 plus years of experience in related field
  • APICS certification a plus

  • Strong PC skills utilizing Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel
  • TOPs/CAPE software knowledge preferred
  • Experience with SAP & Flex PLM preferred
  • Detail oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong organization and follow through skills
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain good rapport with internal and external customers handling situations with confidence, tact and resourcefulness
  • Flexible, adaptable with the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Strong team player with positive demeanor
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently
