VP of Talent

Venture for America is a nonprofit startup that recruits, selects, and trains highly talented recent college grads, places them at startups in emerging US cities for two years of hands-on experience, and provides them with access to the network and resources to become company builders and job creators. The Fellowship is highly selective, as is our team, and we’re looking for people who can jump in and make a huge impact.

We’re looking for an experienced, goal-oriented, and mission-driven professional to level up VFA’s recruitment, selection and marketing teams. This person will be an inspiring people leader and have a clear vision of what it looks like to recruit and select the highest-potential entrepreneurial talent in the coming years. With experience in the startup world and an expertise in innovative people operations and talent development practices, the VP of Talent will not only drive improvements related to the Fellowship but also play a key role in Venture for America’s internal hiring and serve as a manager, influencer, and advisor across the team.

  • Have led talent or people operations at startups
  • Have a record of success that speaks for itself – you understand how to motivate others to build an organization
  • Have significant professional experience and are interested in applying that to a fast growing, mission-driven nonprofit with a young, driven team
  • Are sage-like in your ability to listen, motivate and build leadership in others: someone who leads by example, thrives on coaching and supporting others, and is committed to developing a strong team
  • Are equally comfortable in small group settings and addressing large audiences
  • Can move fluidly from looking at the big picture to set a vision to rolling up your sleeves to execute it
  • Have an uncompromising standard for quality and expect the same of others
  • Have strong values alignment with VFA and our team — you truly “get it” and believe in what VFA is doing and want to share it with the world
  • Have 10+ years of experience and a bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field

What you'll do

  • Lead the strategy for candidate acquisition and selection, ensuring consistency across our external messaging and creating a great candidate experience
  • Oversee our top-notch recruitment, selection and marketing teams to increase our effectiveness and reach in identifying, selecting, and converting candidates for the VFA Fellowship
  • Collaborate with other departments to build a strong class of VFA Fellows and equip them with the tools and resources needed to thrive as startup employees
  • Serve as a leader throughout the organization, keeping VFA’s values and priorities close at hand while developing both team and processes
  • Oversee strategy for internal hiring and people management practices, working closely with our operations team

The good stuff

  • You’ll earn a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, plus health, dental, and vision benefits
  • VFA is a dynamic startup environment with varied responsibilities and a different challenge each day (we mean it – always plenty of interesting problems to work on!)
  • You’ll work alongside a team of crazy motivated, high-caliber people
  • You’ll suddenly have less trouble getting out of bed and going to work in the morning
