Philadelphia Community Manager

Venture for America is a nonprofit startup that recruits, selects, and trains highly talented recent college grads, places them at startups in emerging US cities for two years of hands-on experience, and provides them with access to the network and resources to become company builders and job creators. The Fellowship is highly selective, as is our team, and we’re looking for people who can jump in and make a huge impact.

We are currently seeking an outgoing, results-oriented leader to manage Venture for America’s regional operations in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Community Manager serves as the face of Venture for America in the region, liaising with Company Partners and Donors and helping VFA Fellows develop on their professional journeys.  As VFA’s first hire in Philadelphia, the Community Manager will help set new strategic directions for the organization in the region. This is a multi-faceted role that requires a strong performer with a proven track record.

  • Are goal-oriented, persistent, and able to work autonomously with little direction
  • Love meeting new people, are a natural connector and relationship-builder, and prefer face-to-face communication above email
  • Demonstrate next-level communication skills in person, over email, and on the phone
  • Are exceptionally organized and don’t miss details; you can multitask without dropping anything
  • Anticipate and get in front of challenges, keeping lines of communication to fellow team members open and transparent
  • Have comfort with ambiguity, take initiative, and exhibit calm under pressure
  • Love VFA and are a natural organization builder
  • Have a B.A./B.S. and 4-7 years of experience, ideally in a partnerships, fundraising, or sales role
  • Prior startup experience preferred

What You'll Do

  • The Philadelphia Community Manager will work closely with multiple teams at Venture for America headquarters, and should plan to spend 3-5 weeks in residence at Venture for America Training Camp in June-July, as well as one week in our New York City headquarters once each quarter with more time during onboarding. Other travel requirements will include occasional visits to other VFA cities for Job Fairs, Selection Days, and other events. The PCM will also participate in VFA recruitment and selection events on an ongoing basis, as is expected of all team members.

  • Company Partnerships (30%)
  • Meet with 50+ startup leaders annually to identify, vet, and onboard Company Partners to hire VFA Fellows
  • Help Company Partners identify talent needs and advise them throughout the VFA hiring process
  • Work directly with incoming VFA Fellows to identify ideal roles based in their skills and industry interests

  • Fundraising (40%)
  • Establish relationships with current VFA funders in Philadelphia and secure new funding for the organization, raising a total of $500k-$1mm annually
  • Write top-caliber proposals and reports to funding organizations under strict deadlines
  • Recruit potential Advisory Board members to help lead VFA’s strategic direction in Philadelphia

  • Programs and Fellow Support (30%)
  • Meet regularly with Fellows in Philadelphia and serve as a sounding board in their career progression
  • Organize monthly (or more frequent) events for Fellows including speaker series and community-building exercises
  • Work closely with Fellow City Liaisons to strengthen the program
  • Recruit new mentors and volunteers to support the VFA program
