Investment Risk Analyst - Quantitative Active Strategies (Equity, Multi-asset and Liquid Alternatives)

The Investment Risk Management team within the Risk Management Group (RMG) at Vanguard is responsible for providing independent investment risk oversight of the firm's internally-managed assets. An investment risk analyst works in a highly collaborative team environment to help identify portfolio & market risks, quantifies our portfolio's exposures to these risks, and communicates risk related topics effectively to the portfolio management team and senior management. The team also performs ad-hoc research and develops risk analytics to enhance the business's understanding of risk and how to manage it through risk-aware portfolio construction. The role provides the successful candidate with great opportunities to contribute to the development of robust risk management framework & analytics, and quickly assume more responsibilities within a rapidly changing & growing risk department.

Duties and Responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Partners with Vanguard's Quantitative Equity Group (QEG) to define and develop an effective and efficient risk-management infrastructure in a global environment by gathering and analyzing data from various fund management units, creating reports, providing recommendations, and exercising judgment.
  • Uses a variety of analytical resources, under the direction of senior management, to develop new and enhance existing risk-return analysis, including quantitative risk metrics, performance attribution, multifactor risk models, and scenario analysis.
  • Ability to think critically about broad range of potential investment risks, gathers relevant data and information systematically, and present thorough, clear, and insightful analysis to senior leaders, portfolio managers, and traders in a professional manner.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of financial markets, quantitative drivers, and general investment themes in order to bring an informed perspective to the risk management processes. Develops a deep understanding of Vanguard's investment management functional areas. Keeps abreast of current issues in business operations and incorporates changing business needs into risk analysis.
  • Undertakes a variety of ad hoc analytical and/or business projects as needed to support Risk Management Group (RMG). Ability to meet established project milestones, goals and objectives within established time frames and lead team with the identification, evaluation, and resolution of potential obstacles which may have an impact on the completion of the project.


Qualifications

What it takes:
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent education. Graduate degree and/or progress towards professional certification (CFA, FRM) preferred.
  • Minimum five years related analytical work experience. (buy-side risk management or quantitative research related areas, with excellent quantitative and analytical capabilities experience preferred)
  • Strong foundation of market and investment knowledge including an understanding of equity markets and indices. (solid understanding of drivers of risk and return of equities preferred)
  • Ability to handle multiple, complex projects with attention to detail while meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills.
