Gannett is looking for an innovative and ambitious Website Developer to work on our award-winning marketing team. You'll play a key role in driving company growth at the intersection of marketing, engineering, and product development.

The Website Developer will take direction from our Website Product Manager , work ing alongside our Website User Experience Designer and team of Website Developers to support ongoing website development. You'll operate in an "agile scrum" sprint-based process to turn design mockups into a functional web pages that convert. This will involve the writing of quality code and finding the best technical approaches possible to accomplish a task. You'l l have the know-how to optimize current back-end processes , fix bugs, and uncover /repair bad or inefficient code to eliminate technical debt.

If you are a talented and motivated Website Developer with strong front end skills , as well as demonstrable experience implementing and modifying website infrastructure technology stacks, this position is for you. Our website properties are currently built in WordPress and/or Drupal 8 . We're looking for experience with front end development including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. A little about the job...

  • Support ongoing website development with our Website Product Manager to provide each of our million-plus monthly site visitors with an engaging, educational experience
  • Work alongside our Website User Experience Designer to turn design mockups into functional web pages
  • Write quality code and help to find the best technical approaches possible, optimizing, and fixing bugs, etc ; plus uncover and fix bad or inefficient code to eliminate technical debt
  • Find, diagnose, and repair website problems (broken links, embed codes, duplicate pages, device & browser testing)
  • Help to i mplement A/B and multivariate tests across our site using a combination of third-party software and custom solutions
  • Implement analytics tracking scripts to diagnose conversion and performance issues
  • Be responsible for deployments of website updates
  • Implement and QA test Web Services (API Endpoints) between our website and our marketing and product engineering tech stacks
  • Participate in sitewide initiatives that further expand our website's capabilities and accessibility across devices and platforms; For example: implementing WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)
  • Act as a contributor to Content Management System migrat ion plans; helping to migrate site content and functionality , working with web team to develop new theme engine for the site
A little about you...
  • 3-5 years of experience in web development
  • Degree in Computer Science, IT, or similar
  • Strong experience and knowledge with HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, SASS, and JavaScript/jQuery
  • Strong Experience in Wordpress and working knowledge in Drupal 7/8 or a similar CMS is a plus
  • Knowledge of PHP , MySQL , file structure and theme functions for Wordpress with some knowledge of theme building in Drupal
  • Knowledge of AWS (apache), Cloudfront CDN, Varnish Caching, and Postgres Databases
  • Knowledge of working with version control systems (SVN, GIT) and multiple tier deployment (Dev, QA, Stage, Production)
  • Capable of working within an agile scrum or KANBAN development environment; past experience in working within software engineering systems a plus
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager a plus
  • Ability to play a major role in complex projects , including site redesigns
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, where projects frequently involve ambiguity and flexibility
  • Team player that is focused on collaboration , making sure that all work we put out as a team has been QA-ed , fully actualized , and aligns with company goals
