Are you a sports writer who likes to go beyond game highlights and scores? Are you a storyteller who prefers to take readers on a journey? If you've got what it takes to be a sports storyteller, then the Lansing State Journal is looking for you.

The Lansing region - nestled in the middle of Michigan, is home to both the state Capitol and Michigan State University. Our sports storytellers must be entrepreneurial, willing to take risks and innovate their approach with every story to capture the hearts and minds of our highly diverse audiences.

Desired skills: Strong people skills, interest in a wide variety of sports, watchdog capability, digital production skills - including photo, video and social media strategy.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must be able to embrace the digital (online) focus of our modern media company. Also required is experience with sports reporting, narrative writing, a four-year college degree in a related field and the ability to meet deadlines.

How to apply: Submit a single document file that includes 1) a cover letter that conveys how you would approach a position like this; 2) your resume in one or two pages; and 3) a link to three to five examples of your best work that demonstrates relevant experience. Please note: Applications submitted in a single PDF document will receive highest consideration.

About us: The Lansing State Journal serves Michigan's dynamic state capital market, along with employees/families from some of the largest companies in the state and nation - such as Michigan State University, General Motors, large corporate health care systems and major insurance sector members. Entertainment includes Big Ten sports, MSU's Wharton Center for Performing Arts, a ballpark home to a single-A baseball team AND a U.S. League 1 professional soccer league - plus abundant bars, restaurants, parks, trails and more. Lansing is also within easy driving distance of Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Chicago and the beautiful beaches of the Great Lakes.

Reporters interested in a traditional beat that entails primarily game coverage need not apply, and this is not an entry-level position. If you're looking for the next level, in a next-level city, consider your next career move as a sports storyteller in Lansing.
