Sports - Reporter
The USA Today Network seeks a digital journalist to cover varsity sports and beyond in compelling, intriguing and unique ways for the Beaver County Times and its sister media outlet, the Ellwood City Ledger.
This reporter will own prep sports coverage, building a beat that is focused on storytelling, not events and games. This reporter will produce high-impact journalism that answers the "why" or "how," not the "what." Games can still be important and results still matter but that isn't our focus. This position will focus on reporting on news, trending stories as well as helping to plan for daily and special event coverage.
An average week of coverage could include a compelling human feature, mobile-friendly content such as varsity rankings or Athlete of the Week polls, live tweeting and video highlights from high school football or a deep dive into the life of an elite athlete.
This journalist will use analytics, search engine optimization and other tools to really understand and target the right audiences. The journalist should be comfortable in telling stories across multiple platforms. Ideal candidate would be good proofreader of others' copy for AP style, content and accuracy. Schedule planning skills and ability to work with freelancers also would be a plus.
A strong video and photo background is a must. This reporter will use social media channels to build a personal brand as the community's leading voice on sports in the area.
This reporter also will serve readers across the state, as a part of a Pennsylvania sports team, with stories that transcend specific teams and schools. This reporter will cover news stories as seasons and needs permit and will go after breaking or trending news with urgency.
This position is 37.5 hours per week, with the occasional need to work weekends.
