The Palm Beach Post, part of the USA Today network, is seeking a high-energy, digitally savvy reporter to cover one of its highest-profile beats.
Southern Palm Beach County is a growing, diverse area with a population that exceeds 160,000 and includes everything from million-dollar homes to vibrant outdoor areas to commercial and real estate development to high-profile local politics, to a wealth of entertainment and food and dining options.
The ideal candidates will know how to pull the smartest stories from this wealth of material.
Those candidates will be nimble and well-rounded, able to pivot from crime to public policy to features to enterprise on a dime; each day may demand a different kind of story.
The main priority of the beat is to provide content that is invaluable and unique and can't be found, or easily replicated, anywhere else. We need that kind of steady stream of quality reporting and writing that leads to digital subscriptions. But you also are the go-to person for the audience on this beat, so you'll break timely, useful news, always being in tune to what the audience needs and wants and offering context, depth and perspective no one else can match.
They will be aggressive, adept at using social media and eager to tell stories in innovative ways. They'll have no fear of shooting photos and video, or of engaging with readers online or in person. They should be quick to develop sources and know how to dig into public records. They should have experience, or be willing to learn about, creating resourceful and informative databases.
They'll be part of a community-coverage team that draws on each other's strengths and helps to make The Post the kind of newspaper that reporters and editors want to call home.
They should know how to collaborate with co-workers as they may work with others on investigative, enterprise and county- or state-wide stories.
Bilingual skills are especially valued, but not required, as southern Palm Beach County diversifies.
Expectations are high for this position; so are the chances that the reporter who earns it will find it especially satisfying.
