COMMUNITY GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT REPORTER
The Ledger in Lakeland, FL ( theledger.com ) part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a self-motivated reporter to become the recognized voice on the impacts of our growing community in East Polk County. Focus areas include new business development, traffic and construction, environmental policies, quality of life and outdoor recreational resources. Polk County, in the heart of Central Florida, is undergoing explosive growth, and the east side of the county is leading the way.
The ideal candidate is an investigative reporter at heart who has the skills to dig into an issue but also the storytelling ability to show readers how this issue affects them and their families. This reporter must be able to tell stories across multiple platforms, using digital tools such as video, audio and social to narrate their stories. He or she should be adept at source development, have experience using public records, databases and other digital-focused tools; bring a rock-solid knowledge of AP style; and demonstrate a proven ability to meet daily and long-range deadlines. Covers primarily eastern Polk County, but will require frequent trips to The Ledger's offices in Lakeland, Florida, on the western side of the county, as well as travel throughout the county and occasionally outside of the county. Previous municipal reporting and at least three years of experience at a daily newspaper or equivalent media are preferred. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
