The Anderson Independent Mail and the USA Today Network - South Carolina are looking for an aggressive, persistent and enterprising reporter to cover Clemson University and news of the moment in Upstate South Carolina.

The ideal candidate is unafraid to ask difficult questions, is comfortable building relationships with students as well as administrators, and is willing to dig deeply into important issues at a high-profile state university. Clemson is a major research university with 24,000 students and an annual budget that exceeds $1 billion. We want a reporter who understands and embraces the mission of holding administrators and trustees accountable while also building bridges to connect with a largely untapped audience of digital-native college students.

We are seeking a reporter with watchdog experience and a desire to do deeper-dive investigative work that looks at how the university fulfills its mission and how it relates to the student body. This reporter must also be confident telling stories across digital platforms -- video, alternative story formats and mainstream and emerging social media channels.

This position offers the ability to not only write for the Independent Mail and its newsroom partner, The Greenville News, but also the 109-newspaper USA Today network that frequently calls on reporters across the nation to cover stories of national importance from a local perspective.

Requirements include

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field.
  • At least one year newsroom experience
  • Some experience covering higher education and government
  • A passion for the freedom of information and a desire to hold elected and appointed
    officials accountable.

Anderson, Clemson and Greenville are located in the Upstate of South Carolina at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Greenville is the fourth-fastest growing city in the country, and the Anderson-Greenville-Spartanburg region is a bustling metropolitan area of more than 1 million people that offers an engaging nightlife, amazing restaurants, world class performing and visual arts venues, and easy access to abundant hiking, climbing, camping and other outdoor activities in the nearby mountains. We're also a short drive from Atlanta to the west and Charlotte to the east, and a half-day drive to South Carolina's beautiful Atlantic Coast.

Gannett Co., Inc. is a proud equal opportunity employer. We are a drug free, EEO employer committed to a diverse workforce. We will consider all qualified candidates regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity, family responsibilities, disability, education, political affiliation or veteran status.
