The Journal-Standard , part of Gannett and the USA TODAY Network, is looking to hire a journalist who can discover and report on topics of high community interest from breaking news and business developments to trending topics on social media in the Freeport and Rockford areas.
This reporter should be curious and community-oriented with the ability to easily develop relationships with area leaders and residents in order to produce compelling news stories that communicate vital information, connect residents to their communities and each other and challenge the status quo.
Digital and mobile journalism skills are a must, as is a willingness to adapt and work with urgency. This reporter must be able to shift gears multiple times a day from writing about a new restaurant opening or government program to pulling court files or profiling a community leader making a difference. They must be committed to holding government accountable and driven to be a local news leader.
- Strong writing and reporting skills
- A bachelor's degree in journalism or related field
- 1-2 years of journalism experience (College-level or internships accepted)
- Ability to juggle multiple assignments and meet deadline
- Understanding of how to use social media as a news gathering tool
- Ability to work at a fast pace to publish accurate and thorough stories
- Willingness to attend various community events and meetings
- Local residence or willingness to relocate
