The Detroit Free Press is seeking a full-time real estate reporter for our business desk. The reporter for this job will be adept at digging into data, identifying trends and producing regular reports on the market in southeast Michigan and beyond. But look, in the wrong hands, that stuff can be boring. We don't want you to be boring. We will empower you to find the real story behind the news, the characters and the curious nature of where we all end up living in this strangely beautiful place - and why. This position will be enterprise-driven by a reporter who learns and knows our diverse neighborhoods, their hallmarks and peculiarities, and their needs. The person who fills this job will also desire to watchdog lending trends, public services and other quality-of-life housing issues.
This new position will be crucial in helping to drive our increasingly subscription-based news report. The best applicant will be adept at writing, writing and writing -- plus data crunching and working in alternative story forms in audio and video.
The Free Press is an ambitious news organization in arguably the country's best news town not named New York or Washington, D.C. We are dedicated to unique, revelatory journalism and growing our digital subscription numbers and digital audience.
The ideal candidate for this position will report and write compelling journalism that informs and engages our readers and helps grow our digital subscriber base. Other essential job duties:
- Act as a public ambassador through community outreach and connect with readers through social media.
- Provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
- Produce watchdog journalism that leads to change.
- Produce storytelling journalism that meets audience needs and interests on every platform, including written narratives, audio and video broadcasts.
- Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism or equivalent in experience and education.
- At least five years of experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
- Must have technical skills - understanding use of metrics, Microsoft Office Suite, videography, and photography.
- Must have required skills - social media, advanced storytelling, advanced analytical ability, interpersonal skills, time management and interpersonal skills.
