Under the direction of the Press Manager (or Assistant Press Manager)—the Press Supervisor II is assigned to perform printing related tasks that may include, but are not limited to: Production & shift scheduling; configuring press layouts; oversight of plate processing; spotting plates; reel set-up & operation; newsprint staging; roll preparation; CMYK ink setting; advanced press operational controls; equipment maintenance; specified reporting; inventory of newsprint, ink, plates & supplies; and press operator training, development & review. The primary objective is to support efficient press operations as needed to achieve & maintain on-time production, product quality standards, achieve waste goals, and operational safety.

  • Provide timely & accurate reports and information to the operations team & management.
  • Immediately report equipment issues.
  • Communicate scheduling needs to press management and supervisors.
  • Pressroom Tasks:

o Provide hands-on supervisory support of thefollowing press & platemaking functions:

  • Production& shift scheduling.
  • Reel operations: Request, deliver & stagenewsprint rolls, set-up reels, prepare approved paste patterns for all rollsizes, use web kites / devices as applicable, monitor automatic pasters and/ormake hand pasters assist with reel room reports as required.
  • Unit make-ready: Prepare pressconfigurations, check & prepare units for operation, spot plates, ink make-ready, web-up, conveyor set-up and folder set-up.
  • Densitometer calibration & operation.
  • Advanced press control proficiency to reduce waste and achieve Optimum Quality standards which includes: Press inch, start &stop, speed adjustments, CMYK ink & water balance, CMYK ink density,registration & compensation, web tension / nip & trolley settings,slitter adjustments, coordinating lost web recovery & press restarts.
  • General press maintenance includes—but is not limited to: Cleaning & replacing blankets, wiping down press units, installing, checking & adjusting rollers, folder clean out, replacing cutting bars, and other press maintenance as specified.
  • Assist with press reports & web portal entries.
  • Assist with newsprint, ink, plates & supply inventories.
  • Assist with press operator training, development & review.
  • Platemaking (CTP):

o Provide supervisory oversight to assuretimely & accurate execution of the following platemaking / computer toplate (CTP) functions:

  • Production & shift scheduling.
  • CTP operations: Request, deliver & stage plates /chemistry.
  • Equipment calibration & operation.
  • Product make-ready: Check, prepare & operate equipment to image,process, bend & sort plates.
  • General CTP maintenance includes—but is not limited to: Cleaning, adjusting or servicing imager, plate processor & bendercomponents.
  • Assist with plate reports.
  • Assist with plate, chemistry & supply inventories.
  • Assist with press operator training, development & review.
  • Safety:

o Always work in a safe manner, andconsistently utilize required safety equipment:

  • Complete required annual OSHA safety training programs: Lockout/Tag-out, Hazardous Communications, Personal ProtectiveEquipment, Hearing Conservation, Blood Borne Pathogens, Forklift.
  • Ensure all machine safety-guards are installed, functioning properly, and in use.
  • Constant housekeeping to maintain neat and organized work spaces.
  • Promote top-of-mind safety awareness.
  • Immediately report all operational concerns and/or potential safety hazards to press management.
  • Immediately report all injuries and/or near misses to press management.
  • Communications:

o Provide timely & accurate reports andinformation to the operations team & management.

  • Immediately report equipment issues.
  • Communicate scheduling needs to press management and supervisors.
