The Des Moines Register is seeking a political columnist to offer savvy commentary on Iowa and national government and politics.

Des Moines is a state capital, and Iowa is perennially a swing state in general elections. It's a hotbed of political news anytime. And when the first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses grow near, Iowa becomes the epicenter of national politics.

It's an enviable stage for someone who knows politics and has smart things to say about it.

This columnist must be or become deeply sourced, from county party chairs to the White House, comfortable working the crowd at corn feeds and throwing elbows on national news shows. He or she will be a skilled writer and communicator who embraces delivering commentary in innovative digital formats. The columnist will build audiences across the Register's platforms and dominate social media, from Facebook to Twitter to Instagram. He or she will use metrics to understand what's resonating with readers and will shape approaches to expand target audiences.

A minimum of a bachelor's degree, five years of professional journalism experience and previous state Capitol or national political reporting experience is required. Submit at least five samples of political reporting or commentary to Rachel E. Stassen-Berger - Des Moines Register, Politics Editor : rachelsb@registermedia.com.
