The Tennessean, part of USA TODAY NETWORK Tennessee, is seeking a part-time News Assistant for our Sports Department.

This is a part-time position, 20-29 hours per week, with nights and weekends.


  • Developing feature stories, breaking news as part of our high school sports coverage.
  • Work with video, putting together highlight video packages from games attended.
  • Compile photo galleries from photos taken by staff and freelance photographers.
  • Answer phone calls to compile game summaries from high school events for scoreboard page in print.
  • Compile scores, standings, schedules for a scoreboard page.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Must be a high school graduate with extensive computer skills, understanding of sports language, statistics and scorekeeping. Must have strong typing skills with high priority on speed and accuracy. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to interface with associates, management and customers on a daily basis. Equivalent educational and sports writing experience may be considered.
