The El Paso Times, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an audience- and multiplatform-savvy journalist to join its award-winning team as a full-time general assignments reporter.
The position requires the ability to report on areas including immigration, courts, crime, local government and other subjects.
The job also represents an opportunity for enterprise reporting on topics including health, environmental issues, economic disparities and military coverage. The approach will be on key issues rather than traditional beat reporting.
A degree in journalism or a related field is required, as well as three or more years of experience. The candidate should be skilled at producing multimedia content, including photographs and video, and be skilled in the responsible use of social media in order to promote reports and increase traffic to elpasotimes.com.
The candidate should understand the importance of SEO use in headlines and related fields in order to boost search traffic to the website.
A positive, team-building attitude is essential due to the need to coordinate efforts with photographers, designers and web producers.
The reporter will:
-Mine data to produce credible reports and break out related information.
-Be able Tweet video, photographs and information from the field during breaking news.
-Be experienced in making FOIA and open records requests.
-Ideally be bilingual in English and Spanish.
-Be willing to report from Mexico.
-Appreciate the cultural mix in the El Paso region.
-Be able to work nights and weekends as required.
-Have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle.
-Develop sources across a spectrum of beats.
-Be able to meet deadlines.
-Have a proven record of accurate, engaging reporting.
-Have a focus on community journalism.
