USA TODAY is looking for experienced investigative reporters with an eye for sophisticated storytelling and the drive to produce short- and long-term stories and projects that appeal to the 7 million people who read us daily.

We want journalists unafraid of asking tough questions, who won't lose sight of the story when combing through reams of records and data.

We value accuracy, fairness and investigative work that uncovers wrongs and pinpoints who's responsible. But we also believe the best journalism sparks an emotional reaction in readers. That combination leads to measurable change.

You'll need a track record of building stories around real people. And you should be adept at using social media not just to promote your stories, but to find stories, tell them - and build an audience for your work.

With the nation as your topic, you will have the freedom to range widely in pursuit of unique stories. You also will have opportunities to collaborate with other members of the I-team and work across the Gannett Network, partnering with the largest team of journalists in the U.S.

Our investigations team works from locations across the country so this position can be based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia, at one of our local newsrooms, or remotely under the right circumstances.

  • At least five years of experience as a reporter for a daily news media organization, including a track record of compelling enterprise and/or investigative work.
  • Fine-tuned sense of right and wrong.
  • Knack for making complex stories relatable on digital, print and social media platforms.
  • Deep understanding of how to use records and data in the service of strong storytelling.
  • Organizational ability to pursue short-term and long-term reporting efforts simultaneously.

Please create and upload one PDF into the resume "link" that includes:
  • links to 3-5 examples of work that demonstrates these skills
  • a resume that focuses on impact instead of awards
  • a cover letter describing why this is a logical next step in your career
