National correspondent/criminal justice

USA TODAY is seeking a national correspondent to cover criminal justice on its nation team. The national discussion about racial injustice in the wake of the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, as well as the long history of issues related to excessive force and brutality, underscored the need to examine policing, judicial systems and prison reform at every level of society. This reporter will focus on systemic issues that perpetuate inequity throughout the system.
This reporter would work in conjunction with our Justice Department reporters and other key reporters across the USA Today Network to look at what is happening at the state and local level with policing, prosecutions and incarceration.
Candidates should have a track record of covering these issues on a regular basis and a portfolio that reflects deep reporting and examples of strong storytelling. Candidates should have at least three years of reporting experience. We are open to where the position is based.

• Bachelor's in Communications, Journalism, Digital Media or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least three years of experience working in a news organization
• Strong knowledge of AP grammar and style.
• Is comfortable using social media to report and promote stories.
• Understands media law, reporting ethics and sourcing.
• Collaborates well with others.
