Pulitzer Prize-winning USA TODAY is looking for an editor to work in a fast-paced, 24/7 new environment. The editor will be part of USA TODAY'S Money/Tech/Travel teams.
The editor will serve as a key gatekeeper for USA TODAY digital content produced by other Gannett newsrooms, its partners and freelance writers. Selecting, editing, and optimizing this content for search and social will be the job's central focus, while assigning and editing trending stories will be a secondary responsibility.
The job requires someone who is skilled in finding financial and consumer stories that appeal to USA TODAYs audience -- content this is both "Main Street smart" and speaks to a diverse readership. This producer/editor must have strong news judgment, excellent editing skills and be familiar with business and tech jargon, spotting holes in stories and improving copy, including writing search-optimized catchy headlines.
Act as a liaison between Money/Tech/Travel editors and content partners, network editors and freelancers.
Be aware of Gannett properties and coordinate with them on a regular basis. Edit local news stories to be consumed by a national audience.
Manage and prioritize edits on a high volume of stories on a daily basis, while focusing on the digital details of story production: Headlines, SEO, multimedia assets and other points of optimization.
Develop and communicate publication schedule for stories.
Identify, assign and edit resonant Money/Tech/Travel trending stories.
Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 4 years' editing experience preferred.
Able to file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.
Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
Strong command of AP grammar and style.
Passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations. Also comfortable using social media to enhance reporting and promote stories.
Understand reporting ethics and sourcing.
