Investigative editor

At the Detroit Free Press, we measure our performance by the quality and depth of our investigative reporting. We are looking for an editor to lead our 5-6 reporter investigative team in reporting national-level investigations from a Detroit perspective. Our ambition is great, but our primary focus is on Detroit and Michigan. The Free Press has a rich investigative tradition, most notably highlighted by the Pulitzer-winning work that led to the downfall of Detroit's mayor a decade ago. Investigative work in the last year includes documenting the intentional production of cars by Ford that had faulty transmissions and the routing of city money to a foundation run by someone with whom Detroit's mayor had a close personal relationship. We have proven that great investigative reporting drives huge digital audience and we intend to keep building on that. Depending on the applicant selected this person could be a hybrid reporter-editor or a full-time editor. This position will report to a senior content editor in the newsroom. Applicants must have substantial investigative editing and reporting experience to be considered. Detroit is one of the newsiest cities in the country and a place where investigative reporting still thrives. This is an opportunity to make a huge journalistic impact.
