The Florida Times-Union / Jacksonville.com is hiring a government accountability reporter. This reporter will be part of a team that covers Jacksonville's vast consolidated government. Coverage will include all parts of this strong-mayor form of government, including the Mayor, City Council, the port, the electric and water utility and transportation and aviation authorities.
But to be clear: We are not looking for someone content to primarily cover meetings. Reporters who have been part of this team have uncovered wrongdoing at the local utility, covered the sinking of a cargo ship at sea, explained the cause behind historic flooding and investigated fraud allegations against two City Council members and a U.S. Representative. This is a mix of writing about politics, business and government, with a strong focus on accountability and following the money. To help us hold government officials accountable, this person must be able to develop sources of city insiders, concerned residents from all parts of our diverse community and business and community leaders.
Candidates must have a proven track record as a tenacious journalist and gripping storyteller, who can demonstrate a comfort with using data and public records to develop and strengthen stories. They'll consider visuals and digital elements to make their stories stronger, and they'll use social media to help share their stories and engage with readers.
While the main focus of this reporter will be to cover city issues, they'll jump in to help with breaking and other news as necessary.
