The USA TODAY Network - Florida is seeking an aggressive investigative reporter to break news, expose injustice and champion access to public information in the Sunshine State.
This reporter's top priority will be both deep impact locally and broad impact in the Florida network's markets that stretch from the east to west coasts and from Pensacola to Palm Beach.
The position is based in Southwest Florida, at the Naples Daily News and The News-Press (Fort Myers), and the reporter's first focus will be watchdog stories in this reader-savvy and reader-supported market. But while rooted in local reporting, this reporter will be expected to quickly identify investigations that have statewide and national importance. Because of Florida's significance nationally, this reporter's investigative work will be supported and amplified by USA TODAY's network of data, graphics, presentation and audience experts.
The successful candidate will have clips that show he or she is passionate about making a difference and holding public officials accountable; demonstrates aggressive public records use and deep source-building; adeptly gathers, organizes and analyzes data; has keen news judgment, and shows both flair and sensitivity in storytelling.
This reporter will be able to work on short-, medium- and long-term stories simultaneously and will be an eager and collaborative member of the Southwest Florida team. This reporter's skills will be relied on during breaking news events, but the typical workweek will be a balance of quick watchdog for short-term enterprise and time for longer, deeper investigations.
We're open to an experienced investigative reporter or someone with an eye for documents and data who demonstrates sharp news judgment and is motivated to connect readers with information that impacts their communities.
Foreign language proficiency, especially Spanish, is preferred.
Interested and qualified journalists, please apply here and include your materials combined into one single document upload, with as much of the following as possible: your resume, a brief cover letter, and a few examples of your work (portfolio/work samples/clips/links, etc.) **The application will only allow one document upload so your materials must be combined into a single document (preferably in PDF format). Completing these steps will ensure that you receive the highest consideration.
