The Desert Sun and the USA TODAY NETWORK seek an experienced reporter for in-depth reporting on the environment and natural resources in the Coachella Valley, Southern California and the West. This reporter will tackle projects of national importance and regional scope. Past work unearthed expired permits of big companies piping water from a national forest, won awards for an innovative virtual reality project aboutthe environmental crisis at the Salton Sea, and reported on the urban vs rural battle over the Colorado River.

The ideal candidate demonstrates professional accomplishments in these areas: Aggressive reporting both through research and in the field, with ability to examine, synthesize and explain complicated topics in accessible ways. This reporting can expand to both explanatory and investigative work. Long-range project work that shows an ability to examine large subjects over long periods of time, condensing and organizing information in ways that engage audiences and reveal new ideas. Projects should include news writing and narrative writing, new technologies and on new platforms. This can include work with data visualization, video, standalone audio, virtual or augmented reality or content specifically oriented to social media.

Requirements: At least 5-10 years of journalism experience, ideally with coverage of multiple areas. Strong familiarity with environmental issues, ideally with familiarity in Western issues including water law and water rights, public lands and federal landownership, native species of the West and other issues. Strong command of AP writing, spelling, grammar and style. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Experience performing a wide variety of tasks under the pressure of deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills required.
