Title: Data and Graphics Reporter
REPORTS TO: Director of Data Journalism, Investigations Team
USA TODAY is looking for a creative, self-motivated data journalist with a passion for graphics and visualization to join its national investigative and enterprise team. In this role, you will use data to find stories and present them digitally. You will inform audiences in easily understood, visually compelling ways using words, animation, maps, diagrams, charts, interactive experiences and emerging story forms. You will work independently and collaboratively on stories of all kinds, from regularly pitching your own ambitious ideas to contributing to our biggest investigations.
Ideal candidates will understand how to acquire, refine and analyze data and use it to break news and tell compelling stories visually. We're looking for someone with data skills who can clearly break down complex issues and processes and has demonstrated they can create eye-catching and informative illustrations, graphics and other visuals that beg to be shared and invite the viewer to dive deeper.
Work location: Flexible for the right candidate.
Work with investigative reporters, data journalists and web developers from conception to execution to tell stories visually.
Tell stand-alone "stories" in unique and engaging ways.
Create innovative cross-platform illustrations, animations and graphics (mobile, social, desktop) drawn from data, whether acquired from official sources or custom built by yourself or reporters.
Share passion for visual journalism by communicating best practices, surveying the competitive landscape and noting trends.
Fully collaborate with our engagement team in production and social media programming for major investigations and packages.
Candidates should be able to show consistent, published work that demonstrates an ability to:
Acquire and analyze data to find stories. We don't really care what programs you use, but you should be technically adept at acquiring, building, refining and analyzing databases. That could include knowledge of SQL, R, Python or similar, but we're mostly interested in your story ideas and your ability to tell them visually.
Deliver compelling, data-driven interactive graphics. Transforming data and information into clear visuals with an emphasis on targeting mobile viewers. Again, we're less interested in whether you use one tool or language over another than we are at your adeptness at data visualization, cartography and charting. If you excel at something in particular, we definitely want to know. If you're a whiz at front-end development or an emerging whiz at something we ought to know more about, tell us.
Be a journalist driven to break news. All the data wizardry or eye-popping graphics skill in the world won't matter if you can't utilize it to unearth information, identify what's new and important, and then show it to the reader. Your portfolio should demonstrate that you regularly use your data analysis and visualization skills to help break big stories or reveal compelling insights that add to intelligent conversation around the news. You should be the kind of journalist who's pitching ideas daily.
Collaborate in a dynamic, demanding, fast-paced environment. You'll be working with a wide variety of beat reporters, investigative reporters, visual journalists and editors, both on USA TODAY's national investigations team and at our local newsrooms across the country. You'll be working on multiple stories at once, from off-the-news deadline visual stories to long-range, in-depth investigative projects (and everything in between).
