The Greenville News is seeking an experienced reporter to cover county government and growth and development in the most populous county in South Carolina.

This is a key position in a newsroom with a strong desire to hold local governments accountable as they manage tremendous growth in a county that is projected to add more than 200,000 people over the next 20 years.

But this is not a traditional meeting-driven county government reporting position. We're looking for deep enterprise that gets at the impact of Greenville County's growth on the people who live here. Important issues range from the need for improved infrastructure to skyrocketing housing costs to the need for better cooperation between local governments to ensure smart growth.

The county also continues to grapple with gentrification, especially in neighborhoods near the county's largest city, Greenville. This reporter will collaborate frequently with our Greenville city reporter and our housing and gentrification reporter to focus on issues that impact those underserved neighborhoods, particularly neighborhoods of color.

This reporter should be adept at building relationships with government officials, but even better at building bridges in communities so we can tell stories from the perspective of the people rather than the officials. We're seeking a reporter who understands that journalism is mission work that can change communities and empower the people around us, and that work of that importance sometimes breaks out of the boundaries of a 9-to-5.

We're a newsroom that values excellence in journalism and work-life balance. And Greenville is a great place to find that balance. Upstate South Carolina is halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte in the rapidly growing Interstate 85 corridor. We're three hours from the beach, less than an hour form the mountains and close to major league sports in both Charlotte and Atlanta. As the anchor of one of South Carolina's largest and fastest growing metropolitan areas, Greenville offers a vibrant nightlife, a nationally recognized food scene and one of the most envied downtowns in the region.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in journalism or related field.
  • At least two years reporting or equivalent experience, experience covering local government preferred
  • Experience navigating data and public records and finding compelling, people-driven stories in the documents
  • An aggressive spirit and a willingness to doggedly ask hard questions of people in power
  • An ability to connect with people in the community in a way that, first and foremost, builds relationships and trust and, second, encourages them to tell their stories
  • The ability to work well with a team of reporters, photojournalists and editors, but also to function independently when needed
  • Sound news judgment
  • A knowledge of AP style and a sound ethical approach to journalism
