The Austin American-Statesman is hiring a communities enterprise reporter to reveal how education, public safety and government policies impact people of color and historically disenfranchised populations in Austin and Central Texas.
We want a storyteller and guide to bring our readers into the lives, celebrations and struggles of the Black, Latinx, Hispanic, Asian American and Pacific Islander, LGBTQIA and Native American communities in the Austin area. This reporter would expose trends and tell the whole story of how issues affect different populations.
The position requires a creative thinker who will produce stories on diversity within communities and on the issues important to those communities. With these goals in mind, the reporter will craft enterprise packages, incorporating graphics and interactives that highlight data and trends, and human-interest pieces that foster empathy and understanding within the Statesman's audience.
The Statesman communities enterprise reporter also will work collaboratively with our audience team to actively engage and listen to our readers and with our visuals teams to tell stories and present compelling content in a variety of formats. This reporter would build genuine rapport with these different communities by meeting them where they are, in person and using social media and other platforms. By covering issues that matter to them and reflect their interests, this reporter will help build readership and loyalty to the Statesman.
The ideal candidate has experience working with data and data visualization software. Preference will be given to candidates who are fluent in Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean or other languages critical to a better understanding and coverage of our diverse community and region. We are seeking a journalist with at least two years of experience, clear writing, strong reporting and a heart for service to the community.
When applying, please include a single document, preferably in PDF format, with all your materials combined - resume, a brief cover letter, work samples, portfolio links, etc. The application only allows one document upload, so please provide your materials as a single attachment. Completing these steps will ensure that you receive the highest consideration. After submitting an application, also email your documents to Rob Villalpando, firstname.lastname@example.org.
