Breaking News Reporter

Chillicothe Gazette Media, a part of USA TODAY Network, have a great opportunity for a Breaking News Reporter to join our newsroom.

In this role you…

    • Are a curious, assertive and energetic journalist who reports on breaking news and keeps a watchful eye on those charged with keeping the city and surrounding counties safe.
    • Report on what people are interested in/talking about right now across all topics.
    • Break news for digital audiences and are the primary on-scene reporter to cover stories as they develop. The ability to report quickly and accurately from the field is essential.
    • Have solid news judgment and the ability to think quickly and respond appropriately in high-pressure situations.
    • Are able to shoot smart-phone photo and video.
    • Grow your digital audience by producing reliable reports, frequent updates and exclusive details.
    • Connect with your audience - through social media, in your writing and on camera.
    • Perform basic production work, including social media management, as needed.
    • Listen to police scanners, make calls and scan social media to break news to our audience on what matters most: traffic, weather and crime.
    • Are competitive; you rarely get beat.
    • Work with a producer to ensure that we break news to users: by push alerts, email alerts and proper play on the home screen and homepage.


    • Bachelor's in Communications, Journalism or equivalent in experience and education.

Knowledge and Skills:

    • Ability to produce top-notch watchdog journalism.
    • Exceptional cross-platform storytelling skills
    • Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing, editing).
    • Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers' time and money.
    • Self-motivation and self-direction.
    • Advanced knowledge of social media and how to engage fan base on digital platforms in the public space.
    • Photo and video skills.
    • Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
    • Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
    • Knows how to use time effectively in a 24-hour news environment.
    • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
    • Must embrace peer-to-peer feedback and training.
    • Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company's goals.
    • Writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
    • Industry knowledge.
    • Organizational skills.
    • Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.

Typical hours: Ranges from extremely morning early to late night; weekend shifts. News often requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
