As Sr. Director, Application Engineering  you will lead the team who builds all of the application features needed to grow one of Upwork's largest submarkets which we've valued at over 750B dollars in total addressable market size.   You will be unafraid to challenge your manager and your peers as you relentlessly drive execution for the company.  Due to the strategic importance of this role, you will report to Han Yuan (SVP of Engineering) for at least the first 6 months of your employment.  If you and the team you build are successful, you will change the company and the world.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Build a team of software engineers that operate as "special forces" across the platform to make changes across the platform
  • Engage and debate with product management and the executive staff on business strategy and the product roadmap
  • Drive on time delivery and execution of key project milestones while maintaining high quality and high site uptime

What it takes to catch our eye:
  • 10 or more years of experience leading engineering teams in multiple timezones
  • 5 more years as an individual contributor with full stack technical depth and fluency in at least 3 programming languages
  • Previous experience managing engineers
  • Employment history at both start-ups as well as at least one job at a recognizable consumer Internet company
