The primary purpose of the job is to ensure that all dental and vision medical expense is accurately booked and accounted for. The function will also work closely with the dental/vision actuaries, the RPS reporting team, and the claims accounting team to ensure that general ledger amounts are in sync with actuarial reporting and claims subsystems (data repositories). In addition, the function is responsible for providing medical expense variance analyses to management which incorporate month over month, actual vs. forecast and actual vs. budget comparisons.

Primary Responsibilities:

Claims Reporting:

  • Analyze claims posted to the GL through Facets/Scion/VAS (via FTS tagging and FSDB) for accuracy and appropriateness
  • Assist with RPS package setup and review
  • Analyze tagging and coordinate with the claims accounting team to ensure that tagging tables are updated appropriately
  • Review ledger and sub-ledger tie-outs (RPS, etc.)
  • Analyze claims retroactivity and coordinate retroactivity reporting with the actuaries and the RPS team
  • Use the Chart reporting tool for lag production
  • Analyze medical expense to ensure claims/IBNR and related amounts are being posted to the correct Business/Operating Unit (BU/OU)
  • Coordinate with the claims accounting team for any claims reversals/corrections
  • Coordinate with the Revenue manager to ensure that claims and revenue are in sync by entity, by group
  • Ensure that membership is consistent with claims booked by entity
  • Ensure that intersegment claims expense is complete/accurate and posted to the correct BU/OU
  • Prepare/review non-RPS journal entries posted to the GL
  • Prepare/approve account reconciliations
  • Prepare/approve R-file claims reporting
  • Review eliminations posted related to intersegment accounting
  • Review and analyze capitation posting
  • Work with Actuaries and evaluate the reasonableness of the IBNR reserves
  • Vision specific responsibilities
  • Ensure costs are appropriately recorded on lab and store OUs
  • Oversight of intersegment profit between lab and regulated entities and ensure proper elimination.
  • Review Cost of Goods sold expense accounts
  • Inventory, rebates and accounts payable oversight


  • Prepare/review PBEs for regulated entity audits
  • Prepare/review PBEs for Department of Insurance (DOI) audits and other requests
  • Prepare/review the preparation of regulated entity analytics
  • Provide regulatory team with assistance in researching DOI requests
  • Prepare/review the preparation of clean claims reports
  • Prepare/review the preparation of the claims portion of the reinsurance analysis

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with concentration in accounting/finance
  • 3+ years of experience in accounting
  • High proficiency in Excel and essbase
  • Ability to extract data from various systems and produce summarized, custom reports

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proven ability to meet strict deadlines
  • CPA
  • RPS/Chart experience
