The Clinical Director of Health System Performance Improvement- Workforce Optimization will serve as the lead clinical expert collaborating with a consulting team that performs assessments, identifies opportunities, designs solutions and partners with the client to implement workforce staffing efficiency initiative action plans. This individual will work alongside client teams across the continuum of care to solve complex care delivery process challenges, improve productivity, and operationalize the client's priority initiatives. The ideal candidate for this role must be passionate about driving workforce improvements in performance, effective at working in a fast-paced, high-energy matrixed environment and be confident in their interactions with senior leaders, providers, and business partners.

The role of the Health System Performance Improvement team is to support financial sustainability for hospitals and health systems by bringing innovative workforce solutions to build and retain a diverse workforce enabling the organization to effectively control and reduce rising operating costs while providing high quality, safe, reliable, and cost-effective patient care. Successful hospitals are committed to continuously improving clinical, operational, and financial efficiency across the continuum of care.

The Clinical Director, Health System Performance Improvement- Workforce Optimization will collaborate with work teams assigned to address opportunities to assist hospitals and health systems improve the engagement and workflows of their clinical and other allied health professional workforce. This includes areas such as premium labor expense, innovative care delivery models, process standardization, span of control, skill mix designed to maximize top of license practice and to leverage technology and tools as appropriate. All leaders on the workforce team are expected to be hands-on with project design, deliverable creation, and implementation support for clients.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leading clinical delivery improvement initiatives focused on enhancing operational and financial performance in the workforce optimization/labor expense management space
  • Implementing leading practice methodologies and care delivery models designed to improve workflows, engagement, and productivity of the patient care delivery teams
  • Identifying complex care delivery challenges and developing project frameworks to reveal root causes and building leading practice solutions to remove barriers. Ability to identify and incorporate relevant risks and mitigation strategies into recommendations
  • Uses research that represents diverse opinions/sources/insights to provide provocative, solution-oriented ideas during team interactions, supplements research with experience and subject-matter expertise
  • Utilizing change management techniques; build consensus among client stakeholders who play a critical key role in the ability to successfully implement identified solutions
  • Supporting and/or leading the creation of sales pursuit materials and other business development activities (e.g., proposals, budgets, and Statements of Work)
  • Achieves a business development/sales goal as established in annual business objectives, effectively leads pursuit of opportunities for follow-on and/or adjacent work at existing clients. Leverages relationships within client organization to surface opportunities and can begin to identify opportunities that fit into another practice's subject matter expertise
  • Presenting to large groups and the ability to adjust message to the audience (CEO, CMO, CFO and other system clinical leaders)
  • Developing and delivering clear and concise updates to senior leadership at the client site and within Optum
  • Providing strategic input to the development of project roadmap and timelines
  • Creating a team-oriented work climate that enables professional development and encourages creative solution and strategy development
  • Participation as a member of various Optum teams to create innovative solutions associated with the strategic development of client programs
  • Providing coaching and mentoring of project team members with the goal of developing and retaining talent within the organization
  • Delegating work aligned with team member's experience, development goals and skillsets
  • Serving as a trusted advisor with clients and team members
  • Leading and coordinating initiative activities including analytics, developing deliverables and report creation
  • Providing general healthcare consultative and advisory services to the client in the workforce optimization/labor expense management space

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in the medical field (e.g., nursing or medical imaging)
  • 10+ years of healthcare operations leadership or healthcare performance improvement experience in the hospital workforce/labor management space (staffing to demand, labor expense reduction, staffing levels, bedside care redesign)
  • Demonstrable experience in driving initiatives and achieving performance and financial goals across complex hospital organizations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft products (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel 50% and up to 80% depending on client need

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or graduate degree in nursing, imaging, healthcare administration, or business administration
  • Clinical consulting experience across multiple clinical and cost improvement related areas
  • Experience developing clinical transformation methodologies and designing innovative solutions in a complex and rapidly changing environment
  • Current resident of any of the following cities: Boulder, CO; Colorado Springs, CO; Dallas, TX; Hartford, CT; Houston, TX; Minneapolis, MN; Nashville, TN; Phoenix, AZ; Pittsburgh, PA; St. Louis, MO; Tampa, Fl
  • Proven track record of building and influencing relationships with external and internal executives and stakeholders in the provider setting
  • Proven ability to lead initiatives with minimal guidance and concurrently work on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated self-starter with solid planning, organization, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated presentation, written and verbal communication skills, including well-developed interpersonal skills

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island or Washington residents is $118,000 to $226,800. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
