MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

The Refreshment Category will play a major role in meeting our Compass growth and sustainability ambition. Refreshment covers Beverages and Ice Cream, and Unilever is world leader in both areas. Ice Cream brands include Magnum, Wall’s, Cornetto and Ben & Jerry’s.

Delivering superior innovations that are holistically designed for global rollout will be critical for the Refreshment category success. Packaging plays a prominent role in these innovation plans, and is a key capability to drive competitive advantage. Not only does it fulfil a very important functional role, to contain, protect and inform, but also as the first “touchpoint” with the consumer, it must engage the consumer, reflecting the brand proposition, and delivering a delightful experience.

Working autonomously, the Packaging Technologist is responsible for developing packaging components, ensuring it is fit for purpose. The job holder will support the packaging team in all areas relating to packaging design and development including materials developments, VIP, Supply chain support. The job holder will plan and execute a comprehensive range of technical validation tests, interpret results, prepare reports and communicate results/recommendations to the project team Where relevant, they will join multifunctional project teams to deliver the packaging activities

The job holder will work closely with other development functions, Brand Development, supply chain, procurement, planning, packaging converters, mould makers, and machine manufacturers.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • To support packaging managers by developing and executing a testing plan for primary and secondary packaging, ensuring packaging is “fit for purpose” compatible with SC, Formulation, Unilever Policy, Consumer and Brand needs and legislation. The testing plan can include laboratory tests (at Unilever, at our convertors, and at 3rd party labs), factory trials, and distribution trials
  • Liaise with packaging convertors and material suppliers in the development of packaging components
  • Deliver packaging which not only meets the required quality and technical standards, but also delights the consumer and builds brand love, through using Unilever’s Packaging Excellence best practices
  • To complete the content of technical specifications for packaging components.
  • Where relevant, to deliver, as a member of a cross functional project team, solutions to agreed projects, on time in full
  • Identify and implement potential cost saving activities across the category packaging portfolio.
  • Attendance of project meetings and deputise for manager when required.
  • To interface with other functions in support of project delivery (e.g. brand development, supply chain, procurement)
  • To manage and deliver their own agreed work plan
  • To develop and test packaging in accordance with the One Unilever Packaging Process (1UPP)
  • To comply with the Unilever Code of Business Principles and all SHE and QA policies, including the support of product claims, risk management and environmental awareness

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE/ QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic awareness in packaging expertise of a range of packaging materials
  • Ideally, working knowledge of the key materials for the category
  • Technical Specification & Supply Chain Support
  • Basic awareness of project management
  • Educated in packaging technology or a related technical discipline
  • 1-3 years in an FMCG company, ideally with some packaging experience
  • Experience in using measurement and testing equipment.
