Uber Overview

Uber is on the lookout for a top-notch Software Engineer to join our TechOps Infrastructure Monitoring and Analytics team. This role involves developing tools that intuitively alert engineers as well as proactively adjust the infrastructure to account for a variety of failure scenarios. Automation is the name of the game here – we want to write code that can automate what would historically take an entire ops team to do. If you love working on software products that touch the physical world and want some serious experience under exponential growth conditions, this is it. The scope of this position will be the entire Uber networking and systems infrastructure – our end goal is to completely understand what is happening with our servers and network.

As a member of the Techops Monitoring and Analytics group, you’ll be working with network and systems engineers to build a platform for intelligent analytics of application growth, server and network infrastructure analysis and alerting, as well as auto-remediation of any failure you can dream up. You should have a fundamental understanding of computer systems and networking, and a desire to innovate at the highest level.

  • Grit.
  • Programming skills. Python is our core language of choice, so familiarity is preferred but not at all required. As long as you’re interested, we are too.
  • Networking. Good working knowledge of TCP/IP.
  • Operating Systems. Experience in the Linux environment and a good understanding of its fundamentals. If you can create Debian packages in less than 10 minutes, we are dying to meet you. A solid understanding of filesystems and modern memory management, threads and processes, the user/kernel-space divide, and all those other implementation details that keep the gears turning.
  • Monitoring tools. Nagios, Graphite, etc. are a very nice to have.
  • Configuration management. Puppet, Chef, etc.
