Director of Engineering, Operational Excellence

This leader of leaders will drive vision and alignment around architecture and operational best practices and develop central programs. These programs include ops metrics review, change management, incident management and architectural/operational planning and review in order to systematically improve customer happiness. Your teams will develop and drive the core internal platforms to support robust system development and management at Twitch. You’ll work very closely with the Twitch development teams, build relationships and operational processes, and represent the voice of our customers within the Twitch engineering organization. The Director of Operational Excellence, who will report to the CTO, has a pivotal opportunity to impact a high growth global service.

The successful candidate will be able to:
- Enable rapid, high quality development by owning and driving the common tools platform used by all teams at Twitch
- Drive prioritization and remediation of operational and architecture risks across Twitch systems 
- Reduce the impact, duration and repetition of production events that negatively affect Twitch customers
- Build and maintain tools to enable teams to proactively assess systemic architectural and operational risks
- Drive technical operational excellence at Twitch
- Hire and develop a team of managers, software engineers and technical program managers to support your efforts

Responsibilities

  • Set and drive best practices for Twitch’s global technology infrastructure
  • Own the stack from development tooling through monitoring and recovery 
  • Lead the process and practices for our global engineering organization as we race to support high double digit growth along multiple dimension
  • Champion and advocate for customer requirements for services across Twitch
  • Drive prioritization and remediation of operational and architecture risks across Twitch systems 
  • Reduce the impact, duration, and repetition of production events that negatively affect Twitch customers
  • Build and maintain tools to enable teams to introspect systemic architectural and operational risks
  • Maintain metrics for all of the above work, set goals for the next stages of the work and drive both current and future resources and directions with executive management
  • Hire and develop a team of managers, engineers and technical program managers to support your efforts

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or other related field
  • 10+ years of overall technical experience, including deep technical knowledge of large-scale web services
  • 4+ years of experience leading multiple engineering and technical program management teams
  • 4+ years of experience of managing products, budgets and justifying resource needs to senior leaders and finance partners
  • Demonstrated team building skills – be able to bring people together, hire, develop and motivate staff members, create appropriately challenging projects for team members, and instill a high sense of pride in the team’s accomplishments
  • A record of driving outstanding operations for large scale technology services
  • Must be able to effectively hold others departments accountable while maintaining good working relations with them
  • A proven track record of innovative thinking balanced with a strong customer and quality focus

Bonus Points

  • Experience in designing and building sophisticated fault-tolerant distributed systems
  • Experience developing system software, distributed systems and data networking offerings
  • Understanding of developing software with systems-level performance constraints.
  • Familiarity with relational database principals
  • Background developing database internals
