Overview
The Baltimore Sun seeks an entrepreneurial, audience-savvy editor to help drive our emerging news coverage. Emerging news encompasses both traditional breaking news such as crime, fire, accidents, sports and weather as well as timely reports driven by what our audience needs to know. Urgent, smart, accurate coverage of these topics is key to furthering The Baltimore Sun's status as the pre-eminent news source in the region.
This person would be responsible for monitoring breaking news and assigning, editing and producing content in varied formats that serves our audience. They would program content on The Sun's website, and they would help execute our community engagement practices, such as programming newsletters, email, web and desktop alerts, and social media platforms.

This role requires hyper-alertness to news and keen news judgment. This editor would be responsible for not only guiding stories from idea conception to final edit, but also writing compelling headlines, maximizing SEO and keeping digital channels updated in a speedy manner.

Responsibilities
- Monitor and assign emerging news as well as quick-turnaround enterprise ideas.
- Guide reporters on story and content development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced and compelling.
- Ensure content is edited and produced well and quickly for digital distribution.
- Use expertise and good judgment assigning content in the most appropriate formats, such as stories, takeaways, photo galleries, video, timelines, charts, graphics and interactive tools.
- Ensure that articles are optimized for search engines and social.
- Manage the content selection, timeliness and presentation of digital channels.
- Use audience metrics/analytics and keen news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategy.
- Breadth of content responsibilities will sometimes extend to sports and community news.
- Shifts may include nights and/or weekends.
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- At least one year's experience as an editor/producer
- Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system. One-two years of professional site production experience is preferred.
- Must work well in a team environment, have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to change
- Must be technically savvy and able to quickly master new processes and software tools used for content editing and production
