Overview
The Hartford Courant is looking for an experienced sports editor to help lead our award-winning department. This person will report to the managing editor and be the day-to-day manager of the sports department. Our primary beats include coverage of the UConn sports teams and many other teams and sports across Connecticut. Our focus is on enterprise reporting and going beyond the advance/game story cycle.
This person must be aware of all relevant games, teams, coaches, schedules and fans. This position is a key part of the Courant's news strategy in developing and editing compelling sports stories, video, and other media. The person is significant in drawing fans to our coverage and drawing new subscribers as well as sustaining current readers by helping to guide important sports stories. The position is in daily contact with reporters, other editors and other team members to ensure a steady flow of the most relevant breaking, enterprise and investigative sports news.

Responsibilities
Among the sports editor's duties:
- Collaborate with content director on story/event planning
- Work with reporters on story ideas and editing of their stories
- Help manage sports channel of website and help plan print edition
- Report and write stories as necessary for department
- Help identify initiatives or content areas that could increase digital subscriptions
- Candidates must have previous experience as a sports editor for a daily newspaper or major market digital news/sports organization. A minimum of three to five years newsroom management experience is also required.
